The Delorean Flies

January 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Gish, Aizo, Chubibo, Wake Up Your Seatmate and Mayonnaise all played vigorously before the good guys of Stonefree took to the stage at the Center Park of Eastwood City last night for the launch of Delorean. On the way to Libis, we passed a Penshoppe billboard with them on it-they were uh, larger than life on that billboard. But onstage, even after coming from a leg of promo gig that afternoon in Laguna, they played big to their hearts’ content. After all, it’s the launch of their second baby, and now the Delorian is known to those who watched a very important night at Libis.

I’m more than happy to announce that on sale now at record stores is the Stonefree’s rocking spanking new CD Delorean. Buy it and moon over the music. Stonefree, for the uninitiated (which excludes the Stonefreaks, Samaskomers, the Valeras, the Tanojas, the Mangubats, etc.), is no boy band, by partaking on Delorean one can safely assume these are manly musicians uninhibitedly baring their souls in thoughtful lines and soaring melodies all their own, not covers of songs made popular by the veterans of Pilipino music. We’re so proud of them.

And also because Miro of Stonefree, my brother is also a Samaskomer as I am, Live A.I.D.S. this year is selling tickets like hot cakes, go now to SM Ticketnet and don’t allow yourselves to miss out on a hearty good laugh before the May elections. It’s UP Samaskom’s 23rd staging of the phenomenal show, on Feb. 2,3,4 8pm with 3pm matinees on Feb. 3,4 at the UP Abelardo Theater. It’s dang going to be different, I tell you, because I’ve seen the preview and if you’re a Live A.I.D.S. regular you’ll laugh non-stop because there will be more than you expect in The Live AIDS Monologues (notice the plural, they’re not exaggerating, they’ve pulled out all the stops so you can watch more monologues than ever! Eat and then drink lotsa water before the curtains are raised, or better yet drink Gatorade, it’s gonna be a marathon. Heck they shoulda called it the Live AIDS Marathon!). For the benefit of the uninitiated, Live A.I.D.S. is UP Samaskom’s annual centerpiece show, and A.I.D.S. stands for ang istoryang dinebelop ng Samaskom-this is the central thing that is oft forgotten to be mentioned when promoting the show nowadays. Back in the day us organization members were able to make it year after year because of our creative samahan (it’s that great part of the acronym Samaskom), it’s not a singular effort made by an uber-talented Samaskomer from a major TV network for a show, no. Then, the credits wouldn’t highlight the major sponsors, full credit would be accorded the members who took part in birthing the show(s), they would be called the stars of the night, which is appropriate because Live A.I.D.S. was always something a Samaskomer would invest in, the Samaskomer is the major stockholder of Live A.I.D.S. above all commercial concerns. We penny-pinched for production expenses, developed ideas from our society and pop culture to come up with songs, scripts and dances. The show has been drawing crowds of parents and siblings, people in the UP community and lotsa loyal laughers… for 23 long years! Cheers Live A.I.D.S. and I pray to God that the members down the line will continue the creative lineage, there is oozing talent all around and I really advice that these young people become Samaskomers if they want an unadulterated chance to express themselves, no holds barred, for all and sundry. Get this A.I.D.S. not the other one.

When you travel put your best foot forward

There is something magical about waking up at dawn, calling for a cab and going on your flight and after a little over an hour, being in another world altogether. Fantastic to be back in Bohol. First off, after close to an hour drive into Carmen, Bohol, to gape at the chocolate hills, it’s like a Lilliputian mountain harem out there. I noted one of those hills having a fence straight down the middle.

The Tarsier meeting wasn’t to be a nocturnal one. We arrived before lunchtime to a sleeping group of tarsiers. With the camera flash off I took pictures. Last I was there, bout two years back, one of them was wide awake and spooked me by rotating its head 360 degrees.

The Loboc River, where we ate lunch (all you can manage to eat while trying not to miss anything along the river cruise) was a relief for the senses especially the sense of taste. The Dumaloan white sand beach, where we had a heavy snack was nice to wade into.

The trip was abbreviated, we saw the sights in a van all in eight hours. But short or long, a trip to Bohol is humbling, people there don’t litter, the streets even up to the most rural place within Bohol, the mangroves, the huge mahogany forest, they are clean, clean, clean.bohol-006.jpgspotless. So when it’s time for the plane to land in Manila, the change simply jars you..traffic, smog, buildings and houses in cramped spaces and the short-timed enchantment leaves you pining for a quick trip back.
